1 The Casting Society of America has announced the winners of its 2008 Artios Awards for outstanding achievement in casting, which were presented at coast-to-coast ceremonies on Monday, November 10. Julie Halston was Mistress of Ceremonies at the New York ceremony at Caroline's on Broadway. As previously announced, Thomas Schumacher, President of Disney Theatrical Group, was the recipient of the "New York Apple Award." SOAPnet Announces Three New Series For 2009

1 Brian Frons, president, Daytime, Disney ABC-Television Group, today announced three new series for SOAPnet, including the reality series GREG BEHRENDT'S WAKE-UP CALL, the scripted drama BEING ERICA and the docusoap SOUTHERN BELLES (working title). The series will premiere on SOAPnet in 2009. "SOAPnet remains committed to growing the soap genre and is increasing its original program offerings next year with new series that contain ‘soapy’ elements and complement the serialized drama found in our daytime and primetime offerings," said Frons. "In speaking to our viewers, we have learned that they are on a path of self discovery and each of our new series taps into that journey." Produced by Avalon Television, GREG BEHRENDT'S WAKE-UP CALL is a reality series of six one-hour episodes in which Greg Behrendt, acclaimed consultant for SEX AND THE CITY and co-author of "He’s Just Not That into You" (now a major motion picture set to hit theaters on February 6, 2009), will address one couple’s major issues each week and use his practical and funny relationship expertise to give them the tools to fix theirs. The show stars newcomer Erin Karpluk (Erica), Michael Riley (Dr. Tom) and Tyron Leitso (Ethan). Grant Aleksander Returns to GUIDING LIGHT

1 Soap Opera Weekly is reporting that Grant Aleksander will return to GUIDING LIGHT as Phillip Granville Spaulding in January 2009. "I love the show very much. I always have, and when I left [in November 2004], I tried to make it clear that there were no hard feelings," Aleksander,49, tells Soap Opera Weekly. During off times from GUIDING LIGHT, he also played D.J. on CAPITOL and Alec on ALL MY CHILDREN. REVIEW: Jason Biggs in Howard Korder's "Boys' Life"

1 On Friday night, I went to see Howard Korder's "Boys' Life," the 1988 stunted-adolescence play starring Jason Biggs (ex-Pete, AS THE WORLD TURNS) and Rhys Coiro (ENTOURAGE) at the Second Stage Theatre in New York. From 1995 to 2000, Biggs was the only male actor on AS THE WORLD TURNS to receive an Emmy nomination. Biggs is probably best known for starring in American Pie and its sequels. Some think of him as an actor who is best suited for the type of frat boy roles that have made him famous. He's moved away from that in recent years, but in "Boys' Life" he revisits that to some degree. The play is the story of three friends who are in a kind of prolonged adolescence. he "boys'" present variations of their efforts to balance their conflicting yearning to grow up but also hang on to their schoolboy way of relating to each other and women. Biggs plays the needy Phil and has a number of hilarious sequences during the show including a wonderful bedroom scene at the beginning at a party given by Jack and his wife. The funniest moment though came in a scene between Peter Scanavino's Don, who seems most ready to grow up, and a whacky girl he has a one night stand with, which risks his budding romance and move into adulthood. There are lulls in the action and not all the dialogue is crisp or engaging. One of the most interesting parts of the show is the set changes that happen between scenes. The rotating sets moved around by the cast are amazingly well done. The show closes on Sunday so go see it if you can. But I suspect we will continue to see "Boys' Life" performed for years to come. As for Biggs, his career is still shining bright. He has the acting chops and comedic timing to last a long time in this business. GRADE: C+

REVIEW: Karl Girolamo in "The Last Days of Judas Escariot"

1 Last night I finally saw Karl Girolamo (Kevin, AS THE WORLD TURNS) in "The Last Days of Judas Iscariot" at Pianos Bar & Grill in Bloomfield, New Jersey. Should Judas Iscariot, Jesus Christ's duplicitous disciple continue to languish in Hell, or can a case be made for his redemption? Playwright Stephen Adly Guirgis seems to think that this sinner should at least be given another hearing. To explore the redeemability of this infamous betrayer, Guirgis has envisioned a courtroom in a corner of Purgatory called Hope. To represent the comatose Judas (Nikhil Vaid), he's created a sexy defense attorney named Fabiana Aziza Cunningham (Shannon Connolly) who presents a petition signed by God to the ill-tempered Civil War era presiding judge. She challenges Judge Littlefield's unsympathetic view of Judas with "Your Honor, are you a citizen of Heaven?" Her comeback to his defensive "my papers are pending" is that his papers have been pending for a hundred and forty years and that he's farther than ever from the call of the truth about hanging himself from a tree on a Georgia battlefield. And so the legal maneuverings between the Kingdom of Heaven and Earth versus Judas Iscariot begins. Cunningham's opponent is a womanizing prosecutor named Yusef El-Fayoumy (David Zappacosta) and the next several hours bring a parade of witnesses. But don't expect a somber, period drama trial. While Guirgis' dialogue is often poetic, it is a poetry couched in contemporary hip-hop street talk with the deeper thematic concerns often presented as laughter-inducing monologues -- for example, the first testimony from Saint Monica (Ayana Bey), "heaven's nag" with a decidedly hip and down-to-earth vocabulary. She relates how she descended from her saintly perch to "check out" Judas for herself and, after convincing herself of his remorse, "went back home and got on the horn with God." Other colorful personalities parading in and out of Littlefield's court are Satan (Roger Casey), Sigmund Freud (Dustin Fontaine) and Pontius Pilate (Girolamo). Girolamo and Casey really stole the show for me. As Pilate and Satan, they had hilarious testimonies that had the audience in stitches. Girolamo played a street thug version of Pontius Pilate with incredible intensity and humor and showed an unbelievable range. This Blacklisted Productions show closes tonight with a show at 7pm, and if you are in the area, check it out. Michael Liscio Jr.'s full scale directing debut is a successful one and I suspect we will be seeing him more in the future. GRADE: B+

The Latest in Soap Videos: I Wanna Be a Pop Star Edition

In this installment of "The Latest in Soap Videos," we take a look back at some of the memorable musical performances of daytime stars. I have limited this look back to eight, but a number of other pop stars (and wannabees) have passed through or are currently starring on soaps including AS THE WORLD TURNS' Lauryn Hill, Martha Byrne and Kristina Sisco; ALL MY CHILDREN's Bobbie Eakes and Jacob Young; ONE LIFE TO LIVE's Kassie DePaiva; and GENERAL HOSPITAL's Jonathan Jackson. RONN MOSS: I never get tired of watching the "Baby Come Back" video from the group Player. THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL actor still goes on the road with his old band playing bass. The song spent three weeks at #1 on the Billboard charts in 1977. Moss has played Ridge on B&B since the show's debut in 1987. DARNELL WILLIAMS: I also never get tired of giving my friend, Darnell Williams, a hard time about "Better Man" off his 1983 album, Pure Satisfaction," and especially about the high note he hits at the end. Lucky for us, Darnell has come back to ALL MY CHILDREN full-time and hopefully another Daytime Emmy is in his future. RICK SPRINGFIELD: What would a look at soap opera music stars be without Rick Springfield. In the early 80s, he was thrilling daytime audiences on GENERAL HOSPITAL and topping the charts with songs like "Jessie's Girl." Most people don't realize though that Springfield had been making music for more than a decade when he finally achieved his biggest success. "Speak to the Sky" went to #14 on the Billboard pop charts for Springfield in 1972. JACK WAGNER: THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL star took "All I Need" to #2 in early 1985 when he was 25 (and starring as Frisco on GENERAL HOSPITAL). He never matched that success on the pop charts with follow up "Lady of My Heart" only making it to #76 and "Too Young" peaking at #52. He did have a Top 15 Adult Contemporary hit with "Love Can Take Us All The Way" in 1986. KYLIE MINOGUE: During a Fitzroy Football Club benefit concert with other NEIGHBOURS cast members, Minogue performed "The Loco-motion" and was signed to a recording contract with Mushroom Records in 1987. That song ended up going to #3 on the US pop charts in 1988. On NEIGHBOURS, Minogue played Charlene Mitchell, a garage mechanic. Angels of East Africa is a Children’s Village for orphans located in South Sudan dedicated to the rescue, restoration, and enablement of children caught in the crossfire of the rebel atrocities in the area. Founded by an unorthodox American pastor from Pennsylvania named Sam Childers, the organization has been operating for a decade, saving the lives of hundreds of children and renewing hope in a region where it had all but vanished. Specifically and most notoriously, the Lords Resistance Army (LRA), led by the spiritist warlord Joseph Kony, is culpable for the heinous crimes that plague the region. The threat of attack at the orphanage is a daily reality, but Sam Childers and his team refuse to let the LRA terrorize the children they have worked so hard to rescue and protect. Children’s Village is the only orphanage in South Sudan that refuses to move or retreat amidst increased rebel attacks or incidents of war. The more than 200 children at the property found their path to shelter in many different ways. Some were brought to the property after they lost their parents to disease. Others walked hours or even days from recently attacked villages, passing out literally as they approached the orphanage gate. Most of the children, however, were rescued by the soldiers and staff from Children’s Village after witnessing the murder of their parents or being abducted by rebel groups. Every child’s story is a bit different, but a common thread binds them all; after experiencing what could only be described as hell on earth, they are eventually rescued by the soldiers and staff at Children’s Village. In a valiant effort that places even their own lives on the line, this devoted staff experiences life every day with these children in order to resurrect hope in their hearts. Sam sees Children’s Village as a mission that gives purpose to his life. He would like to see more people join that mission. "A lot of times we might help someone a little bit, but I'm talking about really saving a life. Most of us have never done that. And if the American people would only learn to really save a life, it would change their own [lives]. I know, because it has [changed] mine."

She said she had an incredible time on the show and leaves with an experience she will never forget. For the first time in the competition, the dancers were split into two groups on Monday's performance show. 1 Two weeks after I ranted about Y&R's Eric Braeden being on the cover of Soap Opera Digest so much, he's back on the cover once again. This makes his seventh cover out of the last seventeen issues (that's 41% of the time). I personally love Braeden and have since my pre-teen soap watching days, but come on, give someone else a chance. Digest needs to think outside the box. It just seems like the shows, the print press and the networks are all so scared about dwindling ratings or subscriptions that no chances are being taken anymore. Martinez has landed the role of Brot Monroe on ALL MY CHILDREN, said Brian Frons, president of daytime for Disney-ABC Television Group. "We are honored and delighted to welcome J.R. Martinez to the cast of ALL MY CHILDREN. J.R. represents the best of the human spirit. His commitment to help his fellow service men and women and their families has inspired us all. J.R.'s challenging journey and resilience will bring a uniquely authentic perspective to the role of Brot Monroe," said the soap opera's executive producer, Julie Hanan Carruthers. According to the show's plot line, Brot served in the U.S. Army in Iraq and was injured in combat. While serving, he fell in love with Lt. Taylor Thompson (Beth Ehlers,) but, due to the extent of his injuries, Brot decided to allow Taylor to believe he was dead. After many operations and recovery, Brot returns to find his fiancee grieving because she doesn't know he is alive. The character's injuries were determined by Martinez's own real-life wounds, ABC said in a release. Martinez's first airdate on "AMC" is Nov. 7. 1 Y&R looking for an actress in St. Louis A local actress will be selected on Nov. 14 to travel to Hollywood to appear in an episode of "The Young and the Restless," the highest-rated soap opera in the country. I'm starting a new series of columns on characters that have been recasted numerous times over the years and where the previous actors are now. I'm kicking it off with Casey Hughes from AS THE WORLD TURNS, inspired by seeing Zach Roerig as Cash on FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS. On AS THE WORLD TURNS, Margo found out she was pregnant with Casey Robert Hughes the day after she pulled the plug on her father-in-law Casey Peretti, at his request. After a fairly uneventful pregnancy (aside from being on trial for murder for part of it), Margo gave birth on Valentine's Day of 1991. 1 Cruise Russo-Zirkel (1991 to 1999) - Russo-Zirkel, who was named after Tom Cruise, was eight months old when he was cast as newborn Casey Hughes. He played the role on a recurring basis for several years before the character was aged for the first time. He does not have many acting credits since leaving ATWT but did appear in the Michele Maher film, Garmento, in 2002. Earlier this year, Russo-Zirkel graduated from Warren County Technical School and began attending Farleigh Dickinson University this fall where he is majoring in 3D animation. 1 Joseph Cross (1999 to 2004) - Cross has been the most successful of all the Casey recasts. He had a film career before ATWT including a roles Jack Frost and Northern Lights. Since leaving ATWT, he has made numerous television and film appearances. He plays Dick Pabich in the new Gus Van Zandt film, Milk, based on the live of Harvey Milk, California's first openly gay elected official. He has upcoming roles in the films Son of Mourning and The Last Film Festival. 1 Ian Boyd (2004) - ATWT was not Boyd's first soap role. He played a young Jake McKinnon in flashbacks on ANOTHER WORLD in 1998. Also prior to ATWT, he appeared in the film, It Runs in the Family, with Michael Douglas and Rory Culkin. Since leaving the soap, he has appeared in a couple of films, Bird in Hand with Greg Shamie and The Motel with Jeffrey Chyau. 1 Peter Vack (2004) - Since leaving ATWT, Vack has appeared on television LAW & ORDER: SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT and HOPE & FAITH and in several films including Love/Death/Cobain, The Treatment and A Perfect Fit. He also had a voice over role in Bully. His next film is Consent, from writer/director Ron Brown, in which he plays the lead role of Joshua. 1 Zach Roerig (2005 to 2007) - When his contract was up in the spring of 2007, Roerig offered to work on the show through the summer but ATWT turned him down. He took an offer from ONE LIFE TO LIVE to play the role of Hunter instead. Since then he has moved to Los Angeles and appeared in the films Dear Me, Assassination of a High School President and Official Selection. He can currently be seen as cowboy Cash Warren on FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS. Ironically, FNL's Scott Porter filled in for Zach Roerig as Casey for one week in 2006 when Roerig was in L.A. filming an Aaron Spelling pilot. Now they are starring on the same show. 1 Billy Magnussen (2008) - Magnussen debuted as the post-prison Casey in January of this year. He graduated from North Carolina School of the Arts and then made his way to New York landing a role in "The Ritz" in late 2007. In addition to his ATWT role, Magnussen has kept busy this year taking roles in the fims Blood Night and Happy Tears.

1 Now that a new version of 90210 is posting decent numbers for the CW, it was probably only a matter of time before the net dusted off MELROSE PLACE as well. Insiders confirm that the CW and CBS Paramount Network TV are exploring the possibility of revisiting MELROSE, much in the same way it recently returned to Beverly Hills' famed zip code. MELROSE PLACE was a spin-off of the original BEVERLY HILLS, 90210. Both shows helped rejuvenate Aaron Spelling's career in the 1990s, turning the TV icon once again into one of TV's biggest hitmakers. The two shows were even paired together on Fox's Wednesday night schedule during MELROSE'S first two years of existence, before MELROSE became a Monday night staple. 1 Once again Susan Lucci was close to being sent home on DANCING WITH THE STARS, but she was given a reprieve. Tom Bergeron told her and Cloris Leachman that they had the lowest number of votes for the night. Cloris was sent home, and Susan will have to step up her game as the competition continues. Soon each dancer will perform two dances and the judges are going to be more critical. The competition is now moving into the next phase and Susan will have to have to be a lot looser in her dancing in order to move on to the next round. 1 On tonight's DANCING WITH THE STARS, Susan Lucci recived mixed reviews from the judges. She and her partner, Tony Dovolani, danced the Samba. In my opinion she was a little tight and needs to let loose a little more. Carrie Anne thought she came out of the box and stepped up her game. Bruno disagreed, telling her that she was off her count. Susan had an Erica Kane moment when she argued with Bruno saying she didn't go off her count. Guest judge Michael Flatley agreed with Bruno that she was off her count. Her score for the night was a 23. If Susan wants to stay in the competition she will have to step up her game. She was in the bottom two last week and came really close to being eliminated. Hopefully she will get another chance to show that she can dance. 1 Last week on DANCING WITH THE STARS, Susan Lucci gave her best performance in the Tango, even though she had suffered an inury. Tonight La Lucci showed why she was a legend. She was still struggling with injury, but decided she would dance despite a fractured foot. Susan and Tony danced the Hustle. Carrie Ann admired Susan for getting out there with her injury and there was no sign of pain. Carrie did suggest that Susan stop dancing in a glass box lol. I think i know what she means...nice analogy from Carrie. Len let Susan's partner know he didn't have to treat her like a china doll and Bruno agreed. Susan is still a contender in my eyes, she just needs to put it out there. In my mind she's like Lance. she needs to just kick it up a notch and do what i Know she can do. Carrie Anne and Len gave Susan a 7 while Bruno gave her an 8 giving her a score of 22 for the night. She is currently tied with Toni Braxton and her partner.

1 AS THE WORLD TURNS head writer Jean Passanante spoke with AfterElton about her role on the writing teams in the three biggest coming out storylines ever written on soaps (Billy on OLTL, Bianca on AMC and Luke on ATWT) and where things stand with the Luke and Noah romance on ATWT. From a Luke and Noah perspective, she talks about their lack of airtime, but doesn't say why that is. She also doesn't reveal anything new about the kissing ban, the reason they have not had sex or when/if Noah will ever be integrated more into the canvas of the show. On ONE LIFE TO LIVE's Billy Douglas (Ryan Phillipe): "..at the time there was a discussion about whether to make the gay teen character a part of the main family [the Buchanans], but ultimately it was decided to make Billy a friend of Joey Buchanan’s — not Joey. I think it was a great story, and it was groundbreaking in a lot of ways, but I also think it would have had more impact at that time if it had been somebody in Viki’s family." On ALL MY CHIDREN's Bianca Montgomery (Eden Riegel): "...so when I rolled over to ALL MY CHILDREN a few years later it was a great opportunity to make Bianca come out — because that was a case where she was Erica’s daughter." On AS THE WORLD TURNS' Luke Snyder (Van Hansis): "I think I heard a focus group or something that said, ‘When is Luke going to find a boyfriend?’ It was so clear the audience really cared about Luke. They wanted him to be happy, and so it’s been really interesting." On Luke and Noah (aka Nuke): "It hasn’t been polarizing. Of course you don’t really know whether someone is gay or straight when they tell you they love the story, but I can only assume the positive response has far outweighed any negative feedback we’ve gotten. I mean, the audience loves this couple!" So why haven't Luke and Noah consummated their relationship? Their chastity seems glaring considering even Luke’s significantly younger cousins Parker and Liberty have hit the sack. “Yeah but then everybody yelled at us for that!” she says laughing before turning serious. “We’ll take the time we think we need to tell the story. Part of what you’re experiencing as a delay is the fact that [Luke and Noah] just haven’t been on the air very much.” Timed to mirror the U.S. Presidential election, Luke and Kevin will run against each other for Oakdale U.’s student council president. Passanante says the election storyline will run a few weeks, but that Kevin could be around longer depending on fan reaction.

When is Soap Opera Digest going to start spreading the wealth with their cover stories? Here's a look at the SOD covers for the past 15 weeks starting with the latest issue date: Click to enlarge 1 I have no problem with Eric Braeden (the main cover story in 5 of the last 15 issues) or Maurice Benard and have read a number of interesting stories about their lives, but there are other actors on daytime, many of whom have never been on the SOD cover or even gotten close. 1 Breakdown of the last 15 Digest covers by number of actor appearances (for two with two or more cover shots): 5 Y&R's Eric Braeden 4 GH's Maurice Benard (includes one subscriber only appearance) 3 DAYS'/AMC's Tamara Braun 3 GH's Jason Thompson 3 Y&R's Raya Meddine 3 OLTL's Trevor St. John 2 DAYS' Deidre Hall 2 GH's Megan Ward 2 Y&R's Peter Bergman 2 AMC's Alicia Minshew If you go back even further you will notice the same trend with Y&R and GH dominating the covers with some DAYS thrown in while the other shows rarely are featured unless you are a subscriber. And pretty much the same actors as well. Does this mean subscribers enjoy ATWT, GL and B&B so they get custom covers but Digest believes fans will not buy magazines featuring those shows from newsstands? Not even Susan Lucci has made the cover recently despite her DANCING WITH THE STARS crossover. It's time to update your business model, Soap Opera Digest. All you have to do is look at your "Poll Call" page to see which actors and couples your readers are enjoying the most. This week alone, Van Hansis was voted as favorite ATWT actor for the 52nd straight week (one full year), and not even an inset cover pic in all that time despite being in one of the most talked about soap storylines of the past decade. How about a cover story on the impact of gay characters on daytime television? Or the lack of African American covers both on the daytime soaps and your cover? I honestly believe a little more diversity and the taking of a few journalistic chances would pay off for your magazine. Just because the writing for the soaps you cover is inconsistent at best does not mean you have to produce an inferior magazine about the genre. With over 150 contract actors on the daytime soaps alone, and a number of interesting behind the scenes stories of various executives and crew members, stop limiting yourself to what seems like a few favorites from the Digest staff. If your marketing research tells you that you are on the right path, it is wrong.

TV Guide: Do you think the future of daytime will end up as short-term nighttime series on SoapNet? Sri Rao: Honestly, I don’t know if it’s possible to HOOK get a 16-year-old or a 24-year-old to be hooked into a show at 2 in the afternoon anymore. We watched them back in the day because of our families. I think networks are trying to win that losing battle. But if you change the fight or the battle, it may turn in their favour. Let’s go after the older viewers. That may be what we’ve demonstrated on Night Shift. There is a segment of the audience to cater to and really grow. By bringing in Robert and Anna, and refocusing on Patrick and Robin, we hoped to reinvest in our loyal audience. I think by combining history and legacy characters with [postmodern] new characters, we really invigorated the core characters and brought in some new viewers. That could be a partial solution to daytime’s problem. TV Guide: From my couch, it looked like SoapNet/ABC gave you autonomy. Is that true? Because that’s A RARE luxury in this business. Sri Rao: Yeah, they did. And yes, I know that’s not often the case. The network has been amazing. They gave me the flexibility I needed. Also, their notes were really constructive. And I’m not blowing smoke up your a--. To a large extent, if you don’t feel like the network supports you, it shows in the work. My creative process was never hindered at any point.

1 With the passing of longtime soap writer James E. Reilly over the weekend, a number of folks have spoken out on the impact of the Emmy Award winner. Marlena De Lacroix writes in Jim Reilly, Very Fondly Remembered: "Jim and I were friends for years for two reasons: we both liked to laugh, and, as two stay-at-home writers, we were self-chosen outcasts in the fairly social soap industry. He was an infamous recluse. My favorite Jim memory happened in December 2000, when I was present at the first meeting ever of Jimmy and Timmy. Jim was so happy that day, he dived into a crowd of PASSIONS fans, accepting compliments and slaps on the back. The famous recluse wasn’t alone anymore. He was swarmed by fans who just loved what he did best … which was to create. That’s the joy, laughter and real affection with which I will always remember Jim Reilly." Tom Casiello wrote a blog on his passing, James E Reilly: 1948-2008: "Say what you will about Jim Reilly, he most definitely will never be forgotten. I will miss this reclusive, uncannily creative talent - the man who changed daytime forever. And at this horribly tragic, sudden, sad time, I hope everybody mourns the loss of this powerful influence to the daytime industry, and sends their prayers and respects to his family, friends, and legions of fans everywhere." DAYS executive producer Ken Corday released the following statement: "The DAYS OF OUR LIVES family is deeply saddened by the recent passing of James E. Reilly. 1 James E. Reilly, most recently the creator and head writer for PASSIONS, has passed away at the age of 60. More details will be provided as they become available. Over the years, Reilly has written for a number of soaps including a memorable stint as head writer for DAYS OF OUR LIVES. He also worked on writing teams for SUNSET BEACH, THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS, GENERAL HOSPITAL, RYAN'S HOPE and GUIDING LIGHT throughout the last few decades. He was born on July 15, 1948, in Bountiful, Utah. Reilly won a Daytime Emmy in 1993 as part of the GUIDING LIGHT writing staff, and a WGA Award for GUIDING LIGHT in 1992. He received nine other Daytime Emmy nominations over the years for his work. UPDATE: Soap Opera Digest is reporting some additional details: Jonathan Russo, Reilly's agent and friend for over 25 years, says Reilly had been recovering from cardiac surgery when he died suddenly in the hospital. His beloved sister Cathy Robinson was by his side. "James Reilly was one of the most profoundly lovely human beings in our industry. He was a towering person in our industry who had a tremendous faith in God and Catholicism, as anyone who watched PASSIONS knows. Everyone will miss him," adds Russo. There are no funeral plans. There may be a memorial service at a later date.

1 The Honolulu Star-Bulletin had an interesting story on DAYS OF OUR LIVES star Darin Brooks today. Much like his on-screen character, Brooks has taken to saving the world -- one dog tag at a time. He aligned himself with the Tag the World project, promoting the sale of dog-tag necklaces to support five causes: animals, cancer, children, global green efforts and Africa. "It's a new, sexy and trendy way to support charities," said Brooks, who was born and raised in Hawaii. "Each cause has several charities listed so you can find something that is particular to you." Each necklace costs $80; engraving names or initials is additional. They'll be available online after Thursday, following a celebrity basketball fundraiser in Long Beach, Calif. As a member of the organization's honorary board of advisers, Brooks is already spreading the word. After receiving his Daytime Emmy nomination in June, he held a pre-celebration party with Tag the World as a sponsor. Now, when Brooks wears his tags on the red carpet, he's able to represent an array of charities near and dear to his heart. "I really believe in this organization wholeheartedly. It's not just helping one charity in specific." Brooks attended Kaiser High School, where he was quarterback of the football team and dabbled in drama, starring as Rapunzel's Prince in the school's production of "Into the Woods." When a friend admires a dog tag and starts asking about it, it's like playing tag, he explained. "I can't tell you how many people come up to me and say, 'That's a nice necklace. Where'd you get it?' Hopefully, they will buy their own tags and support the charity of their choice. It's a great little campaign." Robert Parks Valletta founded the nonprofit organization after spending time trying to create awareness for his brother, who has Dis George syndrome. YouTube, the largest video-sharing Web site, has started to run full-length TV shows from CBS's archive, in its latest step to boost advertising revenue by adding professional programming. The site, owned by Google, said on Friday it was talking to other TV networks to sign similar deals to CBS. Many TV networks already run short clips on YouTube, which also offers millions of home videos uploaded by users. You can now watch full episodes of THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS on the CBS YouTube Channel. Until recently, you could only find occasional preview clips on the channel for all four CBS soaps. The new partnership will put YouTube in more direct competition with Hulu, the online video site owned by News Corp. and General Electric's NBC Universal.

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS Recap, Cut Scenes & Applebees

1 Last night's FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS was excellent. Tami's decision to take the money the boosters had donated for a new scoreboard and use it on academics did not sit well with many folks in Dillon. Buddy brought the mayor to school to talk to her but Tami didn't waver. By the end of the episode, Buddy informed her the board was going to have a hearing on this situation in two weeks. Meanwhile, Eric continued to work with Smash to get him ready for a college workout. Smash was getting discouraged and the coach was having trouble getting a school to come see him. By the end, Eric had gotten Smash a walk on with Texas A&M. I'm sad to see the superb Gaius Charles leave the show, but happy he is getting a proper send-off. In the ongoing Lyla and Tim saga, Lyla encouraged her boyfriend to attend a family dinner to talk up new booster, Joe McCoy, who is an alum of Oklahoma University, a school that may be interested in Tim playing football. Buddy threatened Tim before the dinner which made him quiet and withdrawn. Tim ended up hardly saying a word the entire time and eating raw squab to boot. Lyla was upset but they made up before the show was over. Tyra ran for Student Body President, and thanks to her promising a prom where everyone would get laid, she won. Tami was disappointed at how low she would stoop to win the election. Matt's grandma's dementia started to get worse and as a minor he could not officially be responsible for her. So he borrowed Landry's car and drove to parts unknown to find his mother, and got her to sign a document making him an emancipated minor. I had assumed Matt's mother was dead so this was a shocker. 1 It was a real treat to watch 50 minutes of this wonderful show uninterrupted by commercial. And after the show, a scene that was cut between Buddy and Joe also aired. It provided some insight into the Buddy/Joe dynamic and how things work in the Dillon booster club heirarchy. How on earth is NBC going to edit this show down to 38 minutes when it airs these episodes of FNL early next year? The cut scene also made me wonder how many interesting scenes get cut ever week from FNL and other shows. A number of FNL scenes take place at Applebee's. This is the ultimate product placement. They seemlessly work the show in and out of the restaurant and it feels like it is a true part of Dillon. In last night's show, Julie had taken a job there and ran into an upset Matt outside. Also, half the town packed the place after the latest Panther victory. Perhaps daytime soaps should consider similar arrangements with businesses to add advertising dollars to their shrinking budgets, and make their (mostly fictional) towns seem more authentic.

AMC's Eileen Herlie Has Passed Away

1 Daytime drama has lost a number of soap legends already in 2008 (Beverlee McKinsey, Irene Dailey and Larry Haines to name a few), and now comes word that another shining star has passed. Eileen Herlie, who played the feisty Myrtle Fargate on ALL MY CHILDREN since 1976, died on Oct. 8 in New York City. She was 90. The actress was born in Glasgow, Scottish, and had an impressive stage and film career. She studied theater and appeared in small roles in movies. But she got her big break when she was cast opposite Laurence Olivier in the film version of Hamlet in 1948. She played Hamlet's mother Gertrude even though she was 13 years younger than Olivier. She appeared on Broadway as well, most notably in the musical "Take Me Along" which earned her a Tony nomination. More from the Pine Valley Bulletin: In 1976 she made the leap to the small screen and debuted as former carnival worker, Myrtle Fargate. She endured everyone as the ultimate den mother at the boarding house where just about everyone has lived at one time or another. And has been surrogate mother to, most recently, Erica Kane (Susan Lucci) and confidant to Zach Slater (Thorsten Kaye). In 1984, 1985 and 1986 she was nominated for a Daytime Emmy in the Best Supporting Actress category. And she is one of only a few actresses ever to appear on the three soaps (AMC, Loving and OLTL) as the same character. Eileen has been married, but is divorced and has no children. She is survived by her brother Alfred as well nieces and nephews. Eileen's legend will live on in the hearts of AMC fans who will never forget Myrtle's wise advice and calming influence in the chaotic world of Pine Valley.

1 The coach's wife and Dillon High's newest principal become the centerpiece of a town controversy in FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHT's second episode of Season 3. The decision by Tami Taylor (Connie Britton) to reallocate money raised for athletics to academics, preferring new books to a new JumboTron, has the mayor of the fictional town of Dillon, Texas, on the attack early on in the episode. It's not the only drama in the episode, which sees a former couple start to reconnect and brings a bit of good news back to Brian "Smash" Williams (Gaius Charles). 1 Jon Lindstrom as been cast as the new Craig Montgomery on AS THE WORLD TURNS. HIs first airdate is December 3. Lindstrom is best known to soap fans for his roles as twin brothers Kevin Collins and Ryan Chamberlain on GENERAL HOSPITAL and PORT CHARLES. He won a Soap Opera Digest Award in 2008 as Outstanding Supporting Actor for his role on PC. Before joining the cast of GH in 1996, he played Brady on RITUALS, Paul on GENERATIONS and Mark on SANTA BARBARA. Scott Bryce, the original and most recent Craig, was fired from AS THE WORLD TURNS in February of this year apparently due to backstage drama with Executive Producer Christopher Goutman. Goutman wanted Bryce's Craig to be more like Hunt Block's version of the character per an interview Bryce did with "BuzzWorthy Radio" in July. Despite Bryce's popularity with fans, Goutman did not want him in the role. Hunt Block had a successful run as Craig earlier in the decade, and Jeffrey Meek had a short and unmemorable stint as Craig immediately before Bryce returned in April 2007.

1 Irene Dailey, a late-blooming actress perhaps best known for her roles in television soap operas and for her portrayal of the quick-witted, sensitive mother, Nettie Cleary, in the 1964 Tony Award-winning drama “The Subject Was Roses,” died on Sept. 24 in Santa Rosa, Calif. She was 88 and lived in Guerneville, Calif. The cause was colon cancer, her friend Arleen Lorrance said. From 1974 to 1986, and then again from 1988 to 1994, Miss Dailey played Liz Matthews in ANOTHER WORLD — an upper-class-bred matriarch of a middle-class family dealing with the convolutions of life in the fictional town of Bay City. For that role, Miss Dailey won a Daytime Emmy Award for outstanding actress in 1979. 1 In 1959, Miss Dailey appeared on the soap THE HOUSE ON HIGH STREET. For a year, in 1969, she played the role of Pamela Stewart in the crime-mystery soap opera THE EDGE OF NIGHT. Her many other television credits included appearances on shows like BEN CASEY, DR. KILDARE, THE TWILIGHT ZONE and THE DEFENDERS. Miss Dailey’s film credits include roles in No Way to Treat a Lady, Five Easy Pieces and The Amityville Horror. It was only after appearing in a long series of Broadway flops that, in 1964, Miss Dailey received critical acclaim in the United States. It was for her portrayal of the mother in Frank D. Gilroy’s three-character drama, “The Subject Was Roses.” The play dealt with an incompatible couple’s love for their 21-year-old son (with Jack Albertson as the father and Martin Sheen as the son) after the son returns after three years in the Army. 1 “Miss Dailey’s Nettie is a luminous creation,” Howard Taubman wrote in The New York Times. “She can suggest hurt and desiccation with a stricken glance. Wearing a plain hat and coat and holding her purse, she can turn to walk out of her apartment so that her back conveys her utter defeat and despair.” Miss Dailey was born in New York City on Sept. 12, 1920, the daughter of Daniel and Helen Ryan Dailey. Her father was the manager of the Roosevelt Hotel in Manhattan. Her brother Dan Dailey gained fame as a song-and-dance man and Hollywood actor. At 8, Irene Dailey was dancing in vaudeville, and at 18 she was working in summer stock. With consistent bad luck, she kept winning parts in what she once said were 13 of Broadway’s worst shows. “Miss Lonelyhearts,” for example, had a nine-day run. Miss Dailey ran a lampshade store and worked as a waitress while making the Broadway rounds. Then, in 1960, she tried her luck in London. She was the 47th actress to try out for the lead in “Tomorrow — With Pictures,” about an American woman trying to take over a British newspaper empire. She got the part and drew rave reviews. “Every plummy-voiced English rose of an imitation actress should be dragged to see Miss Dailey,” The Daily Express critic wrote. “She sweats love, breathes hate, weeps desire.” In an interview with Time magazine at the time, Miss Dailey said: “I shall be 40 in September. I have nothing, really nothing. I’m not married. I have no children.” “All I really care about is the theater,” she continued. “But now, for the first time, I know in my stomach that my work is good.”
