News Brief
Hayden Panettiere: Hollywood success has made me a recluse Former GUIDING LIGHT and ONE LIFE TO LIVE actress Hayden Panettiere has confessed becoming a mega-star (thanks to HEROES) has turned her into a virtual recluse. "I don’t ever go out," she says, of her life in Hollywood, where she drives everywhere to avoid being recognised on the street. "I stay at home. I go from garage to garage, and keep myself out of sight." The 18-year-old, who has been catapulted into the A-list since taking on the role of cheerleader Claire Bennet in the US drama, admits she finds being famous "a pain in the ass." "I love where I live and that I have wonderful friends there and I love what I do, but it really has a major impact on your life. This business is very intrusive. People want to know what you’re doing every day, and it becomes less about your craft and your art, and your love for acting, than it is about when you put food in your mouth, or when you’re walking your dog." CANAL ROAD ... Paul Leyden's dark and troubled doctor 1 Even Paul Leyden (ex-Simon, AS THE WORLD TURNS) admits he had a few problems putting a label on his latest character. As Spencer McKay, a psychiatrist working at the CANAL ROAD legal and medical centre, he's friendly to his colleagues - even flirts a bit with some - and spends his days trying to help those who have all but given up on themselves. But he's also a man obsessed with finding the killer of his wife and child, someone who's only just keeping his dark side in check and might benefit from the kind of therapy he metes out. "Oh, he's a complex guy for sure," Leyden said. "In one scene we'll see him going out of his way to help people and then you'll see him visiting a prostitute, throwing someone up against a wall or in tears. There's nobody else like him in a lead role at the moment." As complex as Spencer is, he's perfect for CANAL ROAD, a show that breaks more than a few rules itself. Professor became hooked on pop culture thanks to GL Elayne Rapping is a popular culture expert who is extremely popular with reporters. The professor of American studies has become a go-to source on a variety of subjects for journalists around the world. She was teaching at a small business college in Pittsburgh in the 70s when she became interested in pop culture as an academic topic, thanks to a soap opera. Her students came to class talking about these vivid personalities they knew, and it turned out they were characters from GUIDING LIGHT, she recalled. Rapping got hooked on soap operas, noting they were one of the few places in the 1970s where women could play nontraditional, leadership roles. "It was like a fantasy world where women had all the power," Rapping said. Editor's Note: My how times have changed. `Dallas' movie stalled and minus John Travolta The director is now Gurinder Chadha, the budget been scaled back from $65 million, the latest idea is to rewrite the film as a comedy spoof with -- get this -- Ben Stiller as J.R. Keegan's CORRIE role being expanded CORONATION STREET babe Michelle Keegan is celebrating her new single status by posing for sexy snaps in fishnet tights and high-heel boots. The brunette, 20, has split from long-term love, HOLLYOAKS actor Anthony Quinlan, 22, but won't be short of new admirers. Trouble is, Michelle may be too busy for dating as CORRIE bosses are so chuffed with her portrayal of Tina McIntyre - girlfriend of David Platt (Jack P Shepherd, 20) - they're building up her role.
