Evening News

"Smoother" Sailing Ahead for GUIDING LIGHT Fans? Michael Logan from TV Guide writes: "CBS has renewed Guiding Light for one more year, which keeps it on the air through 2009. But that doesn't mean we're stuck with the show's new artsy-fartsy, überjumpy format. 'I'm very pleased with some of it, and some of it needs to evolve,' says CBS Daytime boss Barbara Bloom. 'I agree that some of the camera work is shaky and frenetic and some of the close-ups are too tight — and that maybe we've broken rules that didn't need to be broken — but this is a work in progress. We're just a few weeks into this new production model. I think everybody who's complaining needs to lighten up.' Oh, snap!" Marcia Cross confirms DH will fast-forward 5 years into the future Flashbacks have become a staple on "Desperate Housewives" where they are routinely used to explain the motivations behind some of the more bizarre behavior committed by the Wisteria women. But if Marcia Cross is to be believed, things are about to get seriously time-trippy around the neighborhood. On THE ELEEN DEGERNERES SHOW on Friday, Marcia not only confirmed previous reports that the series would be jumping five years into the future during the closing minutes of the May 18 season finale, but that the show will be staying there, for good. GL actors to find their light in Cincinnati Caitlin Van-Zandt, who plays Ashlee Wolfe and John Driscoll, who plays Henry “Coop” Bradshaw from GUIDING LIGHT will visit Cincinnati on Friday. They'll work alongside community volunteers to help plant trees in the West End’s Laurel Park, on Friday morning from 8-11 a.m. The cast will be joined by Mayor Mark Mallory, Cincinnati Parks Foundation trustees, and Procter & Gamble, and the trees were donated by Mike Albert Leasing. The cast members also will throw out the first pitch at the Reds-Brewers game Friday night. When Cliché Stories Go Startlingly … Right! Patrick Erwin writes: Soap fans and critics alike complain loudly when we encounter the overused soap plotline. We can see most of them coming from a mile away! We know, for example, that one woman, plus two men, multiplied by a short period of time = ”Who’s the daddy” story. It seems like a good third of all soap characters have discovered heretofore unknown children, and some lucky lottery winners have found more than one along the way! And yet, every once in a while, even the oldest cliché in the book really works as a story. March From Hollywood To The L.A. Docks As everyone knows, SAG negotiations with the AMPTP officially started today. So Screen Actors Guild board member Esai Morales, Los Angeles City Councilman Eric Garcetti, and reps from Los Angeles unions today kicked off a rally for the Los Angeles Federation of Labor's Hollywood to the Docks campaign. 90210 spinoff hires Eden from NIP/TUCK Actress AnnaLynne McCord, who played Eden Lord, on this past season of the FX series, will play Naomi on the new 90210, who is described as hot, rich and one of the most popular girls in the school. Luke MacFarlane of BROTHERS & SISTERS comes out publicly as gay Canadian actor Luke MacFarlane, who plays the character of Scotty on Brothers & Sisters, has come out in an interview with the Canadian Globe and Mail. Regarding his decision to come out after years of speculation in the press regarding his sexuality, Macfarlane comments: "I don't know what will happen professionally ... that is the fear, but I guess I can't really be concerned about what will happen, because it's my truth. ... There is this desire in L.A. to wonder who you are and what's been blaring for me for the last three years is how can I be most authentic to myself - so this is the first time I am speaking about it in this way." In an upcoming episode of B&S, Scotty and Kevin (Matthew Rhys) are married, which MacFarlane feels is groundbreaking despite the obvious attention-getting nature of the soap's storyline: "How exciting that we're saying, 'This can be part of the cultural fabric, now,' because it is two series regulars, two people that you invite into your home and you see every week. It's telling of the beginning of more waves and I'm very proud of that."
